Oh What Destruction

You can spend years building something with your hands that you tear down in moments with your mouth.

In “Oh What Destruction?” we explore James 3:5–8 and the warning that a small tongue can cause far-reaching harm. Like a spark that becomes a forest fire, careless words can spread beyond the conversation where they began.

“Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!” — James 3:5 (KJV)

Gossip, slander, pride, deceit, and harshness can damage trust, relationships, families, and churches. Even words spoken quietly can leave deep wounds. James calls us to take responsibility for what our speech produces.

This message also looks beneath the words to the heart. Guarding our mouths requires deliberate restraint, but lasting change means confronting the anger, bitterness, and pride behind our speech—and depending on the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.

You may not be able to undo every word, but you can repent, seek forgiveness from those you have harmed, and begin practicing the restraint God’s Word commands.
